‘Wake Up’ opens with ominous Hip Hop vocals and strings. A build up of timestretched beats and heavy breaks ushers in more early Jungle strings and big, heavy bass stabs.
‘Jungle Warriors’ begins with more half time beats and rap vocals referencing the darkside. The rolling bass is as dark as it gets with breaks and stabs that span the metamorphisation from Hardcore to Jungle.
The final mix of ‘Hello Darkness’ takes listeners into a psychedelic headspace where the rugged aesthetic of the original undergoes a musical trip to the twilight zone through complex and mind bending string variations.
‘The Voice’ ensues with melodic bleeps leading into a buoyant amen break and more deep, melodic keys from the harmonic realm of the darkside.
‘Jump Up Junglist’ ventures into early Ragga Jungle with brilliantly aligned vocal samples and intricate break patterns, sirens and a dash of Hardcore for good measure.
‘Desire’ wades deep into the ocean of melodious strings and tough riffs paired with high quality drum programming and pitched up/down vox plus a drop that is as Junglistic as it gets!
‘Nowhere’ is a mind bender of a tune, using detuned keys and spooky spoken words with tearout amens, eerie pads and reverse chants that will mess with your head!
‘Giant Steps’ is D. A. R. K personified with blood curdling opening riffs, disembodied vox and chimes. The track takes an unexpected twist (let’s say it packs a Sting) with a timestretched half time drop. This bad boy is darker than the death star!
And so we have a phenomenal album from the foundation era of Jungle. Each track sounds great on the turntables while working as a concept album at the same time!
