Back in the days before it became popular to knock-down bars and clubs to build houses, flats and office spaces or turn them into yet another restaurant, many towns and cities all over the UK had at least one venue that will go down in history as a legendary place to party. This was often down to the people who ran the venues and decided to stray away from becoming just another mainstream cheese-shed everyone wanted to go to and instead, create a unique place to party where the discerning music lover would attend and be entertained by the best of what the underground music scenes had to offer and because the nights were so good, they still get talked about today with such passion that it makes them feel like they only happened yesterday.
In Peterborough, we had one of those very places called Bar Bloc, which was run by Allan Patterson and Ian Clarke and in their house, it was not only House music, but also Breakbeat, Drum n Bass, Funk, Hip Hop and Indie music that kept their dancefloor packed and kept people like myself heading back there pretty much every weekend. It was only a small venue but as many of us already know, smaller venues condense the energy which only creates a more electric atmosphere. Along with all of the weekly nights that were held at Bar Bloc, we also had the pleasure of dancing to legends such as A-Skillz, Skinny Man, DJ Format, Freestylers, Krafty Kuts, Smoove, DJ Cheeba, Featurecast and Soul of Man and with names like that, there is no denying times were pretty damn good!
2020 would have been Bar Bloc’s 15th anniversary since its doors first opened and had last year not been a right-off for obvious reasons, a much-needed reunion to celebrate all the amazing times would have gone ahead. Now in 2021, Alan and Ian have teamed up with regular spinner at Bar Bloc, Pimpsoul, and regular spinners of Funk and Disco around Peterborough in the present day, Eclectic Ballroom and together they’re putting on a little get-together to finally have that reunion.
On the 19th of November 2021, the Bar Bloc Reunion party will be held at Charters Bar, which is a tastefully converted floating Dutch barge that is permanently moored on the banks of the River Nene a short walk from the city centre and train station. DJ’s on the night includes hometown legends, Eclectic Ballroom, Murray Watson and Pimpsoul and headlining, global superstar, A.Skillz!
It’s important to say that the Bar Bloc reunion is not just a party for those who frequented the popular nightspot back in the day. Should you choose to head to Peterborough from afar for the party, you’ll walk into a warm, welcoming and friendly atmosphere and you can be sure that the reminisce crew will want you to have just as good of a time as they’re having.
