Cold enough outside to freeze the balls off a brass monkey, things at The Big Chill House were beginning to warm up! Holding back no punches Life Support Machine hosts room deux in the only way they know how. To kick things off Julie-Anne and Fifties take to the decks with some jackin’ tech that got the floor jumping!
Round 2 saw headlining duo Diverted give us a treat with some hands in the air beats from yesteryear followed by LSM’s chief editor Dave ‘No Hands’ Clough team up with Joe Bot for some bad ass breaks. Last, but by no means least, Kid Chameleon VS Casual Breakin dished out the bass heavy WTFEVER for the grand finale of what was an excellent night!
Thank you to everyone who came and rocked out with LSM as they unleashed their brand of funk fuelled party mayhem on the unsuspecting public at their debut event at The Big Chill House, London! Stay tuned for the next fun-filled instalment…
Having been born out of people’s love for 70’s funk and modern bass music, nu-funk was first heard in the clubs at the turn of the millennium pushed forward by the likes of Quantic Soul Orchestra, Tru Thoughts & Good Groove Records. It was very much a live band thing creating new breaks and flavours for a younger generation but still retaining the ethics of its American godfathers.
LSM’s Kid Chameleon has been a big fan of the genre for quite some time:
“I first came across it during its first mutation, pioneered by the likes of the Fort Knox 5 and A Skillz. This took the sound away from original funk tunes and took it more in a direction comparable with bigbeat.”
A very electic and mashed up collection of hiphop vocals, swung drum beats and groovy but hefty bass, this in turn wove it into the growing nuskool breaks scene around the world and threw a whole new collection of labels and artists into the frame such as Featurecast.
In a bid to set itself apart and make it’s mark on musical history, it took one more evolutionary step – the more modern growing uk bass sound. Stepping the overall tempo up to 120 bpm + bringing in influences from glitch, dubstep, house and many more, the sound is now being picked up by big name djs across the globe such as Bassnectar as well as developing new acts such as the Dancefloor Outlaws. This move has been seen by as an attempt to shake off some of the original tag of nu-funk and move it into a more underground marketable genre.
