It’s the time of the year when Breakspoll fever sweeps the nation and producer DJ types are not only walking the treacherous planks of life as musicians, but also giving away their most prized musical treasures to help sway a few extra votes. Ben & Lex are no strangers to walking away with a trophy or two. Ben is in fact the world’s number one sock fluff knitting champion and Lex recently got his 50 meters swimming certificate. The ever-busy duo regularly dominate the categories and this year is no exception. In fact it’s a joke. Ben & Lex lovers will be able to vote for them in nearly every category. Kicking off 2012 with a bang-a-lang, da boyz are giving away their summer festival blockbuster, an official remix of Cut La Roc’s anthem ‘Freeze’ courtesy of Skint Recordings.

As a part of the official package available to buy from the end of January, this Cut La Roc classic has also been reworked by Afghan Headspin, Rennie Pilgrem and Hoi! But enough promo talk, its interview time. Read on…

Mr No Hands: Guys, Breakspoll around the corner, let’s start as we mean to continue… Who do you think people should be voting for this year? Who will you be supporting?

Ben : The Ape family of course. Us, Freerange DJs, 601… Or alternatively anyone you actually think is worthy of a click. Which is us.

Mr No Hands: Where do you normally stand during the awards? By the stage in anticipation or by the bar pretending you don’t care?

Lex : We’re poised, muscles taught like springs ready to jump in to action at the first hint of a ‘B…’ from Ken Mac’s voice through the speakers. Or dribbling like a wild man from overpriced Vodka & RedBull. Either or really.

Ben: Generally in life though we try and stand as close to Scotty Ken Mac from Pyramid as possible. I have a thing for Herculean muscle bound badboys… He makes me feel little.

Mr No Hands: BBC Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale – She is a music journo legend who deserves more respect than your average war veteran and she’s kicked your asses several times at the awards for ‘Best Radio Show’. How does that make you feel?

Lex : Well, if I’m to get beaten then I’d like it to be by a legend that’s fo damn sho! She was the first person who played our first ever release on the radio and for this I am eternally grateful. Childhood dream fulfilled right there… On a personal note she kicked my ass in the toilets once to. She’s hard as nails is Annie. She’s out-partied Mick Jagger FFS!

Mr No Hands: The Breakspoll committee regard you two as being the twelfth best breaks DJs in the world, below both Lady Waks and Lady Packa. Do girl DJs generally need ‘Lady’ in their names in order to be successful and do you think it should be made mandatory?

Yeah man… Maybe we’ll change our names to ‘Mister Ben & Mister Lex’ …or ‘Man Ben and Man Lex’? Will that work?

Mr No Hands: Speaking from personal experience, I’d say no, not really. What do you collect, apart from swimming certificates and Breakspoll nominations?

Mr No Hands: Finally, Breakspoll events often invite a massive community of Spanish Breaks fans but how many does it take to change a light bulb…?

Ben : It takes just one Breakspoll event to change a light bulb. Also… On that note… Something my Gran once said to me. “What’s the difference between a duck? One of its feet is both the same.” I thank you.
