Heezey, all! A man like Nick Thayer knows that the LSM blog is the hottest place to find and download DJ mixes so he’s put together a wee write up for us all about his brand new, free to download wiki-wiki DJ mix! Over to you, Nick…
Nick Thayer – “This mix is a mini squeezed-out version of what I’m playing in the clubs at the moment.”
“Most of the tunes on here are my own originals, my bootlegs or mash-ups. In the studio I’ve been trying to push a whole range of sounds at the moment. There are tunes on here that reflect my love of hip hop, or club, or drum and bass, or classic breakbeats or whatever. I’m really feeling the moombahton movement too being championed by guys like Dave Nada, Dillon Francis, and Skrillex. It is a Skrillex tune called ‘Reptile’ that I mashed up with Muse in this mix. What I look for when making a mash-up is two tunes that compliment each other, not just two tunes that are at the same tempo because Ableton made it so.”
Word up, Nick. What do you find there needs to be consistently though both tunes?
“There needs to be a consistent energy through both tunes and space in the one to let the other breathe. Often when making mash-ups (like I did with the Skrillex / Muse) I will replay or recreate sounds to make things work together better in certain sections (like the main breakdown). The end result needs to take both tunes that step further. When it comes to bootlegs the first thing I look for is something that I wish I could play in the club, as an original. Like the Sing Sing Sing bootleg right near the start. I love the energy of that original tune, but there is no way I could play that in a set without it sticking out like a sore thumb. So when I make a bootleg of something I’m trying to show off the original as much as possible. Paying respect I guess.”
