Myagi – SkankOMatic [10 Years Of Myagi Remaster] *EXCLUSIVE* + Interview & Mix
Breakbeat don Myagi has spent literally a third of his life in the music industry. Life as a DJ has taken him places he never imagined, seeing sunrises on almost every ocean, and more raucous house parties than he’ll ever be able to remember! To mark the occasion, he has been so kind as to give us an exclusive track and dj mix to pop ya cork to.
Originally released on Freddy Fresh’s Howlin’ records (home of tunes by Krafty Kuts, Fatboy Slim, Ictus, Rory Hoy, Dj Icey, etc) in 2002, Myagi’s Skank-O-Matic had instant support in the party breaks scene.

We catch up with Mr Myagi himself to see what he has to say:
1. Andrew – you have recently celebrated 10 years in the business – what has your best & worst moments been?
Well, the worst one is easy – It’s a pretty epic travel problem that nearly caused me to go crazy…..I was booked to play in Sao Paulo, Brazil on a Saturday night, and I played Montreal on a Thurs. I was supposed to catch a flight from Mtl to NYC at 8pm Friday eve, where I’d transfer to an overnight flight from NYC to Sao Paulo…. Montreal was hit with a blizzard and my flight to NYC was cancelled. I got the airline to book me on an 8am flight Saturday morning to Sao Paulo from NYC on their partner airline, but I still had to get to New York to catch that flight. I cabbed it downtown and hopped a bus (a 10 hour trip or so) to New York….it was going to be tight anyway, but we were delayed at customs crossing into the US and I got to the Port Authority at about 630 am. I got out to the airport and made it to the check in desk with 40 mins before take off – they were checking me in and asked for my ticket. The original airline hadn’t issued me one – I was on an E-Ticket – and so I got turned away, with no return flight home. The worst part is that it was spring break weekend and JFK airport was slammed with families trying to get home; crying kids, hung over college students and hundreds of flight delays. It was horrid. I nearly had a nervous breakdown after that – it’s one of the only shows I’ve ever missed, though I know there was nothing more I could do. Oh well!
The best moment was playing the sunrise set of the Space Cowboys Hoedown at Burning Man 2010. I’m good friends with that crew and DJ Mancub – one of my closest friends and a great DJ to boot – had tried to convince me for years to come out to the playa but I’d never been able to make it work. 2010 was serendipity, and it all finally fell into place. That set will always be with me – it was almost 100% original music and I felt really tied to those tracks. Playing my remixes of Dislexik’s Summer Storm and Long Range (Phil Hartnoll of Orbital fame) – Dispel the Clouds in that setting were magic moments.
2. How did you celebrate a decade of making big phat beats?
Quietly actually! I’m just about to put my new album out after inevitable delays, and theres a lot of interesting interactive content that goes along with it. The album is being released as a “remixable edition” for the iPad/Pod/Phone through Soundtrends and theres been a lot of work on that front, as well as on the sound design front. I celebrated with work I suppose, but that seems appropriate. 10 Years of building a career by myself has always required lots of self-motivating and I’m happy to be getting lots done even after a decade of busting my hump!
3. What’s the coolest thing you own?
Probably my Roland SH-7. I love it. It’s a beast of a synth and offers all sorts of strange features you don’t find on most synths at this point, including FM routing of one of the Oscillators to the filter cutoff, etc. It’s great, I just wish it wasn’t so heavy and was a little more stable.
4. What’s your biggest fashion disaster?
I went through a Hawaiian shirt phase that I though was a disaster for a few years, though I’m bringing some of them out after years of retirement. Maybe my attempt at a movember stash a few years back – that was feeble. I looked 15.
5. Pet hates, what can you not stand?
Hm. Probably people who don’t eat well. I abuse my body in lots of ways but I don’t eat fast food. That stuff will kill you. I don’t really have many hates though – I tend to be a pretty positive person most of the time. Actually – there is one thing and thats when artists detach themselves from their fans. I’ve heard quite a few guys put their feet in their mouths over the years because they let themselves develop unhealthy egos. It’s silly. Your fans can become your friends if you’re in this for the right reason.
