Jay Cunning has taken some time out from his busy schedule to chat to us about the up and coming Sub Slayers room at original rave night Rage, the new Yoof single and to give away some free tickets and track!
Hi Jay thanks for taking the time to answer the questions.
Why did you set Sub Slayers up?
I wanted to capture and develop a new direction for breakbeat, I wanted to fuse the rawness of dubstep and the energy of breakbeat all in a jungle fashion.
What catches your ear when looking for a new artist?
They gotta fit that Sub Slayers sound, when I hear a track that’s right I scope them in!
This coming Sunday sees the biggest line up of Sub Slayer artists in one room. What can the crowd expect?
A wall of bass colliding with the harmonious battering of beats and jungle vibes. Standard Junglist mahem.
How does it feel that nights like Rage, who pretty much founded clubbing as we know it, are welcoming the new sound with open arms?
It’s an amazing honor and great that Rage, wannna come back and fully support this new sound along side their roots and to be honest, who better to do it with!
There has been a big buzz over the label in the last 8 months. Where have your main areas of support come from?
I hate these kinda questions as you can never do justice to the amount of support we’ve had since starting and if I tried to I’d be here allnight naming them! But I’d better give you something so here are some of the highlights: Sub Focus playing our tunes live on Radio 1’s tour, hearing DJ Hype’s playing our releases in his sets, having the likes of Brockie & Funky Flirt call up our Kool London show biggin up the tunes, and getting props from DJ Phantasy live on Rinse FM. Toddla T, Kissy Sellout, Ras Kwame, Jaguar Skills, DJ Fresh, Skream, Bassnecta, KraftyKuts, Pendulum, Kutski, Dub Police, Radio 1 among too many others have been big supporters. Generally though what we’ve been doing has been turning all kinds of heads and in the grandscheme of things we’ve only just begun.
The single has an original vocal. Will we be seeing more of this than the tried and tested jungle samples?
Yeah for sure, you have to dip into the old to get the vibe but it’sequally as important to get fresh new flavors in there to push the music forward.
How did Yoof and Jah Mirkle end up working together?
They met at a local bingo night in Bognor Regis
Where do you stand on the future jungle tagline? Do you think it has the legs to carry itself outside of breakbeat?
Names names names, can’t get bogged down with that shit otherwise Imay as well be a politician, but do I believe in what I and the Sub Slayers artists do, you fuckin bet I do.
Here’s how to win a pair of tickets to Rage, on Sunday 6th May @ Heaven in London:

This re-rub of Basement Freaks’ ‘Records In The Crate’ with Stickybud’s ‘Up In The Game’ delivers the bad ass beats it promises from the start. The rhymes of Mc Lozen weld perfectly to this kind of b-boy flavour. Phatter than an obese hippo, Juno and their label Bombastic Jam are also running a competition to remix this track – find out more HERE. Parts available FREE from the download below:
On to Pimpsoul who grabs nu-funk by the balls giving Knife Party’s filthy vibester a proper good thrashing! Lethal crunching beats push ghetto vocals over a punching sweet bass. You won’t be capable of turning it down!
LSM’s Lawton Warren catches up with Mooqee to talk about their new release and collaborations in our first ever audio interview below!
Mooqee & Pimpsoul ft Bianca Gerald – ‘Feeling Good’ Review
‘Feeling Good‘ is the second collaboration between two kings of bass. The previous release from the pair was something of an underground smash, holding top spot on Beatport’s Hip Hop charts for over 150 days consecutive. The talented Bianca Gerald takes on the wonderfully soulful vocals. Simply sumptuous. Preview their new release here:

Introducing Valentin Ramon… ‘Valantino‘ (as he is known to me) produced my Mr No Hands artwork – the old logo and the new one! He produced the artwork for this very blog! (Yes, the bloody tape deck is his!)
I first met Valantino when I was working at Nando’s in Stratford many years ago. It was before I’d even had my first single, ‘Fat Cats’ (now a free download) released. A time before I had even acquired the ‘Mr‘ part of my alias, for legal reasons… I was just No Hands. He produced the artwork without me even asking – he was just happy to help. That’s the kinda guy he is.
He is a super-talented Spanish comic book illustrator based in London and he needs your help to create his new 96 page graphic novel ‘Hole in the Earth‘. He is looking to raise $6000 to help self-publish this book. Printing, shipping, editing… the lot. Check out this superb video preview:
