Jay Cunning [Sub Slayers] Interview, Competition + Free Track

in Events, Featured Downloads, Other Stuff, Tracks by Kid Chameleon on May 5th, 2012

Jay Cunning has taken some time out from his busy schedule to chat to us about the up and coming Sub Slayers room at original rave night Rage, the new Yoof single and to give away some free tickets and track!

Hi Jay thanks for taking the time to answer the questions.

Why did you set Sub Slayers up?
I wanted to capture and develop a new direction for breakbeat, I wanted to fuse the rawness of dubstep and the energy of breakbeat all in a jungle fashion.

What catches your ear when looking for a new artist?
They gotta fit that Sub Slayers sound, when I hear a track that’s right I scope them in!

This coming Sunday sees the biggest line up of Sub Slayer artists in one room. What can the crowd expect?
A wall of bass colliding with the harmonious battering of beats and jungle vibes. Standard Junglist mahem.

How does it feel that nights like Rage, who pretty much founded clubbing as we know it, are welcoming the new sound with open arms?
It’s an amazing honor and great that Rage, wannna come back and fully support this new sound along side their roots and to be honest, who better to do it with!

There has been a big buzz over the label in the last 8 months. Where have your main areas of support come from?
I hate these kinda questions as you can never do justice to the amount of support we’ve had since starting and if I tried to I’d be here allnight naming them! But I’d better give you something so here are some of the highlights: Sub Focus playing our tunes live on Radio 1’s tour, hearing DJ Hype’s playing our releases in his sets, having the likes of Brockie & Funky Flirt call up our Kool London show biggin up the tunes, and getting props from DJ Phantasy live on Rinse FM. Toddla T, Kissy Sellout, Ras Kwame, Jaguar Skills, DJ Fresh, Skream, Bassnecta, KraftyKuts, Pendulum, Kutski, Dub Police, Radio 1 among too many others have been big supporters. Generally though what we’ve been doing has been turning all kinds of heads and in the grandscheme of things we’ve only just begun.

The single has an original vocal. Will we be seeing more of this than the tried and tested jungle samples?
Yeah for sure, you have to dip into the old to get the vibe but it’sequally as important to get fresh new flavors in there to push the music forward.

How did Yoof and Jah Mirkle end up working together?
They met at a local bingo night in Bognor Regis

Where do you stand on the future jungle tagline? Do you think it has the legs to carry itself outside of breakbeat?
Names names names, can’t get bogged down with that shit otherwise Imay as well be a politician, but do I believe in what I and the Sub Slayers artists do, you fuckin bet I do.

Here’s how to win a pair of tickets to Rage, on Sunday 6th May @ Heaven in London:

The Star Of Kings – Meat Katie’s Lot49 Birthday Bash

in Events by Fifties on October 3rd, 2011

And what a night it was! I always look forward to my excursions to London. It is a gathering of people from all over the world who are there who are there for one thing and one thing only – to party together to dirty, dirty beats! We had people from Ireland, France, Wales and Australia all crammed under one roof at London’s secret gem – The Star of Kings.

The Star Of Kings - Meat Katie's Lot49 Birthday Bash

From outside the bar looks like any old bar in London but when you step inside the magic happens! Greeted by familiar faces and boutique deco, we are quickly chaffered to the stage where a Dita Von Teese style stripper in spangly blue outfit proceeds to give Mark a birthday strip – poor Pember didn’t know where to look (yeah right!)

Business over and done with, The Star Of Kings unveils it’s hidden treasure – possibly one of the grimiest basements I have seen in many years of raving! Upstairs was pumping out the techno whilst downstairs is all about the tech-funk where Rektchordz, Dylan Rhymes and Meat Katie delivered lashings of filth as sweat dripped down the walls. We had ladies dancing in PVC, and I saw one girl had even abandon her crutches in the corner as she lept to her feet to dance! musical healing? I guess so!

Punter, designer and DJ; Matthew Miles adds:

As always lot49 delivers. It was well worth the trip down from Wales and the music, was some of the best I’ve heard played this year. The crowd were up for it and made you feel more than welcome…

That says it all really! BIGupz and thanks to the Lot49 Crew for putting on a quality party – we wait in great wait in great anticipation for the next one!
